Magical
San Blas
     A historic town rich in history, set in a tropical oasis, and bird lovers nirvana as over three hundred species of birds migrate to this area every winter. San Blas is just two hours by bus or car from La Penita and a well worth an overnight stay. 

     Take the jungle river tour through the Tovara springs; visit the fort of San Blas, and the ruins of the Rosaria Temple, and the island of Isabel. If driving from Los Ayala to San Blas, take the time to stop and explore the numerous beautiful beaches you pass along the way including; Playa Los Tortugas and Playa Platanitos. San Blas also features some great shopping for local crafts.

    The town of Las Varas is just forty-five minutes north of Los Ayala along highway 200, about nine kilometers after Chacala. This true Mexican town is also by collectivo which you can catch on the Main Avenida in La Penita. Visit the towns picturesque church and the museum to view some photos of the Huichol indigenous people who live in this area. Las Varas is a great place to visit for the day if only to shop for shoes and experience an abundance restaurants serving a myriad of authentic Mexican dishes at incredibly low prices.

 
     This picturesque palm tufted beach which was once the refuge of pirates is out of a story book. The beach is sandy; a delight to walk along, to swim at, and loved by body boarders of all ages.

    Chacala beach is a popular spot for lunch and offers a variety of beach front palapa restaurants to choose from, all serving fresh seafood and oysters.

    Tour guides are available to take vacationers sports fishing; and to visit the nearby beaches of Las Cuevas, Chacalilla and La Caleta. The snorkeling is good at Las Cuevas when the waters are calm. Land activities more suited to your preferences? Walk the length of this fine beach, and hike to the volcano behind Mar de Jade.

Rincon de Guayabitos
     This spectacular three kilometer beach is just around the corner from Los Ayala. Rincon de Guayabitos is just five minutes from Los Ayala, by car or collectivo; or a fifteen minute walk. If walking, head north along Los Ayala's main street - Bahia de Banderas; and head straight up the hill leading out of town, past Vista Guayabitos restaurant. Turn left at the first main street and walk straight into town, then turn left at the first beach access. The beach of Rincon de Guayabitos is referred to as the "Largest Swimming Pool in the World" because of its shallow, warm, and generally calm waters. The beach is perfect for walking, swimming, people watching; and boogie boarding at the north end.


La Penita de Jaltemba
     This enchanting little town with cobblestone streets is decidedly Mexican and charming. La Penita hosts numerous festivities of cultural interest, and is also the service town for Jaltemba Bay; where you will be able to find most everything you need.

     La Penita is just ten minutes from Los Ayala by car; and twenty minutes by collectivo. Visit La Penita's famous open air market which is held every Thursday from about 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Town Plaza. Stop by the called Hamaca Maya to buy an authentic hand woven hammock, and Armandos for authentic and unique silver jewelery. A Bancomer bank with an interact machine is located just one block off the Main Avenida in town.

    Rincon de Guayabitos offers a large variety of shops and restaurants; numerous taco stands, several ice cream parlours and a couple of discos where you can dance into the wee hours of the morning. Horseback riding trips through the tropical rainforest of Los Ayala are available with Inda & Terrio Munoz on Av. Sol Nuevo No. 54-A. During the high season a fabulous Artisans Market is held in Guayabitos every Monday in the Town Plaza beside the church.
La Colonia

Just five minutes north of La Penita de Jaltemba by collectivo or car. La Colonia is well worth the trip if only to access the beaches of Boca de Narjana and visit the turtle sanctuary; located mid way down this beautiful beach.
Las Varas
    From Las Varas you may take a taxi to the beach of Chacala for about 100 pesos; or rent a car and hire a guide to visit the petroglyphs of Alta Vista and the gorgeous beach of El Campomo. Access to El Campomo is via the town of Lima de Abajo which is located just a short distance; south of Chacala.
