Did You Know?

It is not impolite to answer questions with a simple si (yes) or no (no) in Mexico. There's no way to say "Yes, it is/does", or "No, it isn't/doesn't", as in English.
This & That
A Few Words from the Editor

The weather is absolutely perfect! Warm, sunny days and clear blue skies; and comfortably cool evenings filled with clear, starry skies.  Best of all the weather will remain like this until April! This weekend I spotted some dolphins frolicking in the waters just off of Los Ayala beach.  Paradise indeed!

The celebration of Dia de Revolucion in Los Ayala was very well attended by ~ 150 persons. The highlight of the evening was definitely the dance troupe and drummer from the state of Jalisco.   To view photos of the event, including the beautiful photos of Ken & Bea Rauch see Dia de Revolucion.

The first weekend of December in Los Ayala was a most memorable weekend! Volunteers from Mexico city, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and all over Jaltemba Bay gave their time to help out with the "Clean the Oceans Days"
event. A team of scuba divers came from Mexico City and Guadalajara to clean the ocean waters around Coral Island.  Volunteers from all over Jaltemba Bay helped clean the local beaches, and the beach on Coral Island. Los Ayala beach also benefited from the use of the Guayabitos beach cleaning machine, twice in one week!

Event volunteers were treated to lunch at Boca del Rio restaurant on Los Ayala beach -  compliments of Juan Rodriguez. Juan also supplied all the boat transportation for the event. To read a special expression of appreciation by Aruturo Ramirez from Guadalajara to the municipal government, event sponsors, Juan Rodriguez, and the volunteers who made the event possible see "Uniting to Clean the Oceans."

The majority of the roads in Los Ayala were leveled through the continued efforts of Romy Mora, Regidor for Jaltemba Bay. Romy Mora asked me to say thank you from her on behalf of the community of Los Ayala to "Congressman, Gerardo Palomino" who paid for the machine to level the roads in Los Ayala. Thank you!

Officials from Profepa visited Los Ayala in early December to ensure that all the hotels on the beach are draining their pool waste water into their sewer hook up, rather than into the ocean. It is also not acceptable to allow pool water to drain into the ocean. Romy advises that Profepa will return in two weeks time to ensure that all the hotels have complied with regulations.

Finally, the news everyone has been waiting to hear... Congratulations to Miguel Sillas, Los Ayala's new Juez!
Thank you Romy Mora, for everything you have done for Los Ayala, and continue to do; and for setting the standard for service excellence in Los Ayala.

It's a tradition in Los Ayala to host Christmas Posadas in the Town Plaza, and this year the date is tentatively set for Tuesday, December 20th.  A children's party is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Los Ayala's Town Plaza. If you love children and photography, this is a great opportunity to take some real cute shots! The adult party is set for 7 p.m. . Delicious homemade tamales (the best in Los Ayala) and the sweet hot beverage Atole will be available for purchase.  Check the Upcoming Events page for details.

This months newsletter is a double edition... Enjoy and make sure to meet Local Folks Henry and Robin Fremont, check out Decembers Magical Moments which features Doug Spivak's gorgeous photo of Los Ayala!

Los Ayala News Update

Tourism Meeting
Romy Mora advises that the tourism meeting held in November was small with only seven members in attendance. At the meeting Romy was asked to forward a request to the municipal government to redo the Andadors (walkways leading to the beach) in Rincon de Guayabitos. That's all!

Elections for Juez of Los Ayala
Congratulations to Miguel Sillas, Los Ayala's Juez! The election results were announced on Dec. 4th. Yes, I promise to take a photo of Miguel Sillas, on the very first opportunity I receive!

Roads
All of the main roads and several of the side the roads in Los Ayala were leveled in early December, thanks to the continued efforts of Romy Mora, Regidor Jaltemba Bay. The municipal government provided the machinery and labour, and local folks paid for the gas which was ~ 200-300 pesos per person.  A special thanks from the community of Los Ayala to Congressman Gerardo Palomino who paid for the machinery.

Romy Mora is still working on a project to improve the roads in Los Ayala! Her project proposes that property owners who wish to have the roads fronting their property paved in a mixture of cobblestone and concrete will have the project subsidized by the municipal government. The cost is ~ 350 pesos per square meter and if Romy is successful in pushing this project through, the government will cover 2/3 of the cost, which makes it a real deal for proprietors who will only have to pay 1/3 of the cost.

Challenges experienced early this month included; no water for residents of Los Ayala for ~ two weeks, and overflow from the local pumping station because the CFE bill had not been paid by Siapa. I'm happy to advise that both issues have been resolved.

More great news! Romy is spearheading a project that will see, sometime in June 2012, all the main streets south of Bahia de Banderas paved with interlocking brick, with the funds raised from the 3 for 1 program.

Where to find Gourmet Cookies and a Good Cup of Coffee  in Los Ayala

My Personal Experience with Renewing my FM3 Lucrativo

Once you have filled out the forms and submitted all required paperwork at the IMN office in Bucerias, they will give you a NUT; not to eat, but to use as a key to view the state of your application. On the paper with your NUT you will also find your "Contrasena" which you all know by now serves as your password. The password you are provided is  numerical, so you can think of it as your PIN, just slightly less important than your NUT.

Using your PIEZA #, not pie and not pizza, (which you receive on line when you submit your on-line application) and your NUT (which the friendly clerks at INM give you once they have accepted your application and checked your documentation), you can track the progress of your application on the INM website.

Go to the INM Website and select " Tramites Migratorios," which is the third box down on the right of the page. This will take you to the next page where you will enter your PIEZA and your CONTRASENA (good thing that you saved your PIEZA and did not eat it all!) Now click on selection and up comes your old NUT!

Below your NUT you will find your personal data and your NUE. Don't worry, I had no use for my NUE either! It just seems to be there. Below your useless NUE, is a table which documents the progress of your application.
This table follows the progress of your tramit,
(application) step by step, until finally it says paid.

Below the box that says paid, is a rather confusing Line of Spanish which roughly translates to " Expedite your Tramite." It says "Click Aqui." Do not bother to "Click Here"as it will just take you back to a page with more forms to fill out, which you will recognize as the same forms you filled out weeks ago at the beginning of this odyssey. The button "Click Aqui" is a little Mexican joke on you and what it really means, is that your FM is ready for you to pick up!

So off you go with your PAPER containing your PIEZA, YOUR CONTRASENA AND YOUR NUT, you can leave your NUI at home.

You are now ready to go and be fingerprinted, in a beautiful hue of navy blue ink, and get your document!!!!!!!! Wasn"t this fun???? Lets do it again next year!

Actually it is really easy and the process is far more  efficient than it was four year ago. My FM was ready for pick up in two weeks and the folks at the INM office could not be more helpful. If your Spanish is not very good, they have staff on board who speak English and are very willing to help you.

I asked the staff at the INM office, and consulted with Adriana Hidrogo, an Acountant in Los Ayala who processes FMs for foreigners as a service. I was advised that the proposed introduction of new immigration laws for Mexico are at this stage, just an idea, a project, that everyone hopes will be implemented.

When I pushed for news of an expected date for the introduction of the new immigration law,  Adriana advised that she was hopeful the new law would come in to effect in six months to a year, but she qualified her statement by advising that is still too, early to say. The first step is for the guidelines and manuals to be printed and distributed to the staff in charge of processing FMs. In other words, it may be a "Mexican While."

PS The Oxxo store located just down the street from the INM office sells cotton balls and nail polish remover, which works just fine if you wish to restore your finger tips to their natural colour.

The coffee shop at Posada Las Flores serves fresh American style brewed coffee, espresso, cappuccino, and cafe latte. The coffee is local, and they process the beans on site. Fresh, local coffee! Internet services, including skype are also available at the cafe...Right here in Los Ayala!

The poinsettia is native to Mexico and has been associated with Christmas celebrations since the 17th century. There is a legend connected with the poinsettia which tells the story of a young boy who walked to the church in his village to visit the Nativity scene. Upon arrival, the young boy realized that he had nothing to offer the Christ Child and decided to gather some green branches which he found growing along the road. When he laid the branches by the manger, a beautiful red star-shaped flower blossomed on each branch.

Traditionally Christmas festivities in Mexico begin with “Las Posada’s” which consist of nine consecutive days of candlelight processions and parties, starting on December 16th. The festivities of Las Posadas reflect Joseph and Mary’s nine day journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Christmas Eve is the last night of the posada and the local people typically attend midnight mass at the town church and return home to enjoy dinner with their families.

In Los Ayala, the local children delight in a game in which “Piñatas”, typically resembling a doll, teddy bear or Santa Claus, filled with candy and then suspended from the ceiling on a rope. Each child is blindfolded and attempts to break the Piñata with a stick. The child who succeeds is the hero of the party, and shares the candy with all the children in attendance.

We purchase Piñatas at the local store, stuff them with candy and distribute them to the less affluent families who live in our neighbourhood. The delight on the children’s faces and puts us into the Christmas Spirit.

We celebrate Christmas Eve in a traditional manner but we roast our turkey on the BBQ because frankly it is too hot here, to roast a turkey in the oven. I bake shortbread and spice cookies, which our neighbours think are absolutely scrumptious. We decorate the outside of our house with Christmas lights, and we even have an artificial Christmas tree adorned with decorations from the local market, a few keepsakes that we brought from Canada, and a few of the latest from Wal-Mart.

On Christmas day we pack our swimsuits and a picnic lunch, and hire a boat and driver for the day, to explore the beaches along our coast. We delight in watching humpback whales cavort in ocean, snorkelling at a nearby island, and just strolling along our beautiful beach. To end the day we crack open a bottle of champagne and jump in our pool for a dip, just because we can!

Coffee in Los Ayala
By Anna Ibarra of Posada Las Flores

The coffee at the the cafe at Posada Las Flores is roasted fresh, every three to five days. All the coffee is local; grown in Nayarit, at different altitudes. We carry several different varieties, from different altitudes, medium to dark roast.

We are also happy to roast coffee for you, but request that you place your order, one day prior, to give us time to roast your coffee. Our coffee is always fresh! Always local, and always roasted here on site!

Last year we bought the coffee beans as berries; washed them on site, and dried them on the hotel roof in the sun. At this stage of the process it is referred to as "Cafe Pergamino." Next we took the beans to Compostela where they are run through a machine to remove the outer chaff. At this stage of the process it is now "Cafe in Oro."

Los Ayala Locals Experiment with Fixing their Roads
Local folks in Los Ayala who live on, or near upper Madre Perla, or "Rio Perla" as it is commonly referred to during the rainy season, are experimenting with fixing the roads themselves.  They leveled, compacted and paved the center portion of upper Madre Perla with a wide strip of natural cement. A three meter wide strip of the cement material was also laid down the center of the streets named Gaviotas and Pelicanos. It was a quite an expensive project (~ 30,000 pesos), but less expensive than paving the road with cobblestone and cement would have been. Only time will tell if the road work will stand up to next years rains.

The folks living in this particular neighbourhood wish to express their appreciation to Morley Schemenauer, for spearheading the initiative to fix the roads and for his most generous contribution to the project.  Thank you, Morley!  (Morley, is the gentleman featured in the fourth photo.)

Morley, expressed his appreciation to everyone in the neighbour hood who contributed to the project, or by lending a hand. Personally, I am looking forward to being able to ride my bike, up and down Madre Perla. Thank you, Morley!
