"Huevos"
The standard meaning of huevos is eggs. But when it is used with the verb tener meaning "to have," the inference is more likely to be "gonads." Tiene usted huevos? "Do you have balls?" The problem is avoided by saying "Hay heuvos?" "Are there any eggs?"

Did You Know?

The Riviera Nayarit starts in Bucerias and extends all the way to San Blas. Los Ayala is located in what is referred to as the Northern Riviera Nayarit! Come visit!

This & That
A Few Words from the Editor

The hot and humid season seems to have arrived a little earlier this year. Los Ayala experienced its first heavy rainfall which was accompanied by a spectacular lightening show  on Sunday, June 26th and yes, several of the streets in Los Ayala experienced some flooding. The worst flooding as usual was Calle Caracol which is located on the north west side of Los Ayala's Town Plaza; and Calle Pez Valle at the corner of Madre Perla.

I am sad to be the bearer of the news that the work on the roads in Los Ayala that was supposed to commence this June has been delayed.  Romy Mora, past Juez (Mayor) of Los Ayala advised me that the delay is because, at this time, the municipality does not had enough funds to contribute their portion of the 3 for 1 program.  This is partly due to the recent elections and the upcoming change in government. My understanding from Romy is that the current government is spending monies on very small projects, and that funds for larger projects like the 3 for 1 program will have to wait until the new government is in place.

Romy advises that the new government will come through for Los Ayala, and match the funds, however at this time there is nothing we can do, except wait. She is hopeful that the new government will contribute its share of program no later than November 2011 and that work will commence on the roads in Los Ayala in the spring of 2012.

The community of Los Ayala raised $11,275 pesos through the community Garage Sales and $39,550 pesos through the Cruising to Chacala fundraiser. This translates to 158,200.00 pesos for the community of Los Ayala to use to fix the roads when matched by the 3 for 1 program.

However, the $16,808  pesos raised through Los Ayala's "Property Tax Payment Day", will be used to level the roads in Los Ayala sometime this summer.

The children of Los Ayala's Elementary school have been enjoying their studies in  air conditioned classrooms, thanks to the most generous donation of the brand new Mini Split air conditioner which was made at the Dessert Buffet and Dance. They are also enjoying the eighteen brand new desks and a shaded outdoor lunch area built with the funds raised.

The streets of Los Ayala were decorated for the Sacred Heart of Jesus festivities with vivid red flags. They runners from Talpa were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of upon arrival in Los Ayala. The community enjoyed an evening of festivities and fireworks which included Los Ayala's traditional burning of the castle. To view photos from the the event see Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Be sure to read "Mexico Musings" a new feature of the Los Ayala news that I am delighted to share with our readers. Mexico Musings is written by a Chelsea, a Canadian teen in which she reflects on her life experiences in Los Ayala, Nayarit, Mexico.

Beach Lover?
Check out San Pancho (Playa San Francisco)

This spectacularly gorgeous, untamed beach is wide,  sandy and located just thirty minutes south of Los Ayala.  Playa San Francisco, which is a great beach for walking, and a great spot for seriously expert surfers who hanker to ride the tubes. It is not a good beach for swimming due to the large surf and strong undertows. Instead sign up for a horseback ride along the beach or try an adventurous horse back ride through the lush surrounding jungle.

Shortly thereafter they packed all their belongings and moved to Los Ayala bringing along the family pets, a Golden Retriever named Piitta and the cat named Leory. They are now full time residents of Los Ayala, and loving it!

Mexican Musings
A Canadian Teen Reflects on her life experiences in Los Ayala, Nayarit, Mexico

Hi my name is Chelsea Swanson and I'm thirteen years old. I have one brother named Chase who is eleven years old, who enjoys computers and designing videos. He is very creative with that sort of stuff. My Moms name is Rhonda and my Dads name is Mark, but everyone calls him Tony.

My dad works for Argo Road Maintenance and my Mom operates a daycare at home. We live in a small town called Kamloops which is located in British Columbia and has about 85,000 residents.

My favourite sports are volleyball and swimming. Some day I hope to be competing in the Olympics for swimming and to win a Gold medal! My favourite foods are shrimp tacos from Rosita's 1 on Los Ayala beach (You can only get these in Mexico!), mango’s and hot sauce. My number one goal in life is to travel the world, and I'm keen on spending lots of time in Australia, the Mediterranean and Asia.

When I'm older I hope to have my own fashion line, or my own surf shop in Sayulita. Some things I love to do in my spare time  include drawing, hanging out with friends, listening to music and talking with my Mom. I really have a passion for music. One of my favourite types of music is Mexican music. My dream when I was younger was to be Brittany Spears. I have even wrote my own lyrics and sheet music on the guitar. I don't think I could live without music!

Some of the things I will be writing about in my column is my experiences in living in Los Ayala, why my family lives there, what the culture is like to me, and much more.

When I'm older I hope to be living in Mexico, I think it has been a great experience! LOL

                                                               Cheers,

Rainy Season Critters

Seemingly, perfectly timed to to arrive with the the first rainfall are what I refer to as the "Rainy Season Critters". These include big bottomed flying ants, flying termites and rather large flying round brown beetles who arrive by the multitudes with the first rains.

During the first week of the rains flying termites seem to be everywhere and they have absolutely no difficulty squeezing through the teeny holes in my screen windows. I am told that after the termites mate, they drop their wings and die. Indeed for about five days after the first rain, I can count on finding all my window sills lined with termite wings.

The big bottomed ants that my neighbour affectionately refers to as "J Lo Ants" copulate, and then the females go  lay their eggs all over Los Ayala, and the males simply land on my patios die. During my first two summers here I was horrified to wake up to find dead flying ants all over my  patios, the streets and even the beach. I'm still not crazy about it, but at least I know it is a short lived event!

While visiting San Pancho, take the time to enjoy a leisurely lunch ate either of the two restaurants located at the beach entrance. The dining is great at both! Or walk about the charming town, and enjoy breakfast or lunch at one of the many, superb restaurants. Maria's on the Main Avenida is popular with tourists and residents for good reason! The meals are well prepared, the service is friendly and dining al fresco while on vacation is always a great choice.

San Pancho's Main Avenida is a great place to shop for arts, crafts and comfortable high fashion made of 100% cotton clothing, exotic skirts, dressy flip flops and beautiful functional hats that one wear with confidence. Only in Mexico!

Staying for dinner? Check out Ola Rica! The BBQ ribs and steaks are favourites with the locals, but best of all is their chocolate cake!

San Pancho is also known as Playa San Francisco and one of the best bird watching locales on the Riviera Nayarit.

Everyone's Talking About the Weather!

Allyson and David Thompson of Jaltemba Bay Life bought a weather station!

Now you can see how truly bloody hot and humid it is here in the summer! Keep in mind that the rainy season is also when Los Ayala and the Jaltemba Bay area is at its most beautiful and offers delightful, lush green tropical vistas. As well, it is usually a little cooler in Los Ayala... Still too, hot? Head to the beach or turn on the air conditioning!

Congratulations to Allyson and David, and thank you for buying us our very own weather station!

The brown beetles (Scarabaeoidea) spend most of their lives underground, emerging from the earth in response to rain, no doubt looking for a little romance.

Other common rainy season insects include green crickets, elephant beetles and rhinoceros beetles. These critters are kind of cute! I've have yet to get a good photo of a green cricket so instead I have thrown in a photo of a spider and a bat, just for fun!
