"Reto"
The original meaning of the word "Reto" is "Challenge" but the word has taken on a totally new connotation since the revolutionary political and economic changes began in Mexico in the 1990s, and that are still transforming the country. Today "Reto" stands for "Facing the Challenge" to make Mexicans aware that they can have a better life; that they too could create an affluent society

Local Folks
Meet Elaine & Morris Smith
Elaine and Morris first visited Los Ayala in the early 1970s when the only road into Los Ayala was the road that ran along the mountain of what is now Villas del Tropico.
Los Ayala had no streets, electricity, potable water, or telephones, and the elementary school was just a small square cleared in the jungle with a chicken wire fence enclosing a few desks for the students.
At that time the only residential area in Los Ayala was a small group of homes on Avenida Estero.
One day when Elaine was walking along the old road which was surrounded by thick jungle and tropical trees she came across a man riding an elephant which confirmed her thoughts at that time; she was truly in jungle country! She found out later that the circus was in town and the fellow riding the elephant was just giving it some exercise.
Over the next twenty years Elaine and Morris returned several times to Los Ayala to visit with friends and during this time they gradually became acquainted with the people living in town. Like many of us, they fell in love with the warmth of the people and the sheer beauty of Los Ayala, returning 1994 to buy a home on Avenida Estero. They have lived their dream ever since! Magical Moments
Refusing an invitation in Mexico is considered rude by many folks and that is why if you extend an invitation to a local resident you may find that they say yes but not show up.
This & That
A Few Words from the Editor
Things are heating up in Los Ayala; the weather that is! The day time temperatures are ranging from 28-30 C and the evening temperatures around 20-22 C. The humidity readings are starting to climb and the daily readings are anywhere from 35% - 75%; no where near the 90% readings typically seen in August but even so 75% humidity combined with 30C means it feels like 35C - definitely the start of the feeling sticky hot season!
Needless to say, ceiling fans are definitely appreciated at this time of year and by June, air conditioning during the evenings is essential to most folks for a good nights sleep. That said, "It is not really hot here, until the day the Flying Ants arrive in Jaltemba Bay," and they will soon; by the thousands! On the day of arrival these critters are found lining all the streets and beaches of Jaltemba Bay; and the patios and terraces of homes. A good reason to have screens on your windows! The flying ants mate on this special day and as is frequently seen in nature, the male ants die shortly after the copulation is complete. The females lose their wings and lay eggs to start a new ant colony. No wonder we have so many ants here!
This annual natural phenomena is commonly associated with the true start of the "HOT" season and occurs more or less in unison with the rain bird phenomena which starts sometime in early June, when each evening one hears the unique crooning melody of the rain birds (The sounds are actually produced by insects called "Chicharras"), which lasts until the day the flying ants arrive. We did not see the usual multitudes of flying ants last summer and last summer was a little cooler then most. However, last summer we set records for rainfall, so who really knows what the relation between the flying ants and rain bugs is! For sure, I will be checking the numbers of flying ants this year to see if their is any direct correlation with how hot the summer this summer is. One thing I can say with confidence, is that the annual arrival of the flying ants is somehow related to the arrival of the hot and humid weather.
Who Loves Mangoes? I do!
June is also when mangoes are found everywhere in Jaltemba Bay, and I love mangoes! They are plump, succulent, abundant, inexpensive and loaded with antioxidant vitamins A, C and E; vitamins B and K; and other essential nutrients including potassium, copper and several essential amino acids. I enjoy eating mangoes throughout the rainy season; often picked directly from the many public trees, providing I get to them before the birds do, which can be somewhat of a challenge.
Los Ayala Sunsets
One of the things I love about the month of May are the beautiful sunsets in Los Ayala. Although we do not see the sun set below the horizon in Los Ayala, we do see the stunning effects of the sunset on the sky. The sunsets often turn the sky a brilliant red! I have included a photo gallery in this months newsletter which features three sunset photos. The first photo is from May of last year and shows off the brilliant red sky. The second photo is from April this year, when the skies are a beautiful pink and blue. The last photo is from May of this year which shows how the red sunset skies frequently seen at this time of the year are starting to build in intensity.
Celebrating Children and Motherhood!
Day of the Children and Mothers Day were both celebrated handsomely in Los Ayala. Local children in Los Ayala enjoyed a party in the Town Plaza which featured games, candies and best of all a Clown. Moms from Los Ayala, La Joya, Guayabitos, La Penita and La Colonia were treated to a party cruise of Jaltemba Bay on Los Ayala's Gran Fiesta and dinner at the Boca del Rio Restaurant on Los Ayala Beach, compliments of Juan Rodriguez!
Religious Newsworthy Event
The Sacred Heart of Jesus journey begins in Los Ayala on June 21st when the runners depart for Talpa from the Town Plaza and ends on June 24th when the runners return to the Town Plaza at 12 noon. Further details about this annual event will be posted on the Upcoming Events page by the middle of June June.
It is Pretty Quiet in Los Ayala these Days
With respect to news content not the level of music being played in town! So this months news is brimming with photos, including this months Magical Moments which feature Bea Rauch's beautiful photo of an Anhinga. I hope you enjoy this months Local Folks which features the delightful story of Elaine and Morris Smith!
The next edition of the LA Times will be published in the first week of August. However, be assured that if the summer rains wash out the roads and/or if any construction work begins on the roads in Los Ayala, I will send a news update.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I have an actual tomato plant brimming with tomatoes growing out of my road at the side of my house... This plant has never been watered yet my house plants are struggling to thrive and I water them twice a week. Just one of the amazing wonders of nature here!

Mexican Delights
Flambeed Bananas
¼ C butter or margarine
½ C brown sugar
4 ripe bananas
¼ C Kahlua
In a chafing or heat resistant dish, melt butter. Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved. Slice bananas in half lengthwise; add to brown sugar mixture and stir quickly to coat. Allow to cook, stirring constantly, for approximately 1 minute. Add Kahlua to dish and ignite (carefully) with a long match. Quickly spoon flaming banana mixture over vanilla ice cream and serve. DELICIOUS!
Where to Dine during the Off Season?
Undoubtedly it is very quiet in Jaltemba Bay during the off season, especially during the months of August and September. As a result many restaurants close or reduce their summer hours. Lucky for us, the majority of the restaurants on Los Ayala beach remain open for business; including Restaurant Las Ranas, Palapa Rositas, Pikkikos and Erica's! AND Vista Guayabitos is always open year round!
In Guayabitos, Latitude 21, Matejas, Restaurant Charly and Pina Loca remain open a few days per week. In La Penita, most of the Mexican restaurants remain open during the summer months. What happens in August and September? Time to explore the culinary delights of tacos!
