Turtle Beach - Boca de Chila
Playa Las Tortugas Playa Los Tortugas
Playa Los Tortugas is an exquisite beach located at the northern end of the Riviera Nayarit coast in the unspoiled area of Boca de Chila. This portion of the Riviera Nayarit coastline is referred to as Costa Tortuga (Turtle Coast) and as the name implies, this is a specially designated area to protect endangered sea turtles.

Worth exploring? Yes! The lovely seven and a half kilometer beach of Playa Los Tortugas is lined with palm trees and the sandy beach is one of the most beautiful on the Nayarit coast. The beach is perfect for walking and beach-combing for pretty sea shells. During low tide the shallow waters at the northern end of the beach extend for several meters from the shore; perfect for a fun filled frolic amongst the waves and for body boarding. Be aware that the ocean floor of this beach is not perfectly level, and while the waters near the shore remain relatively shallow, the depth of the water can change by a foot or two, quite unexpectedly.

If you want to get away from it all, Playa Las Tortugas is the perfect choice. However, there are no restaurants or facilities on the beach, so bring along an ample supply of drinking water, a picnic lunch and enough snacks to last the day. The beach does not offer much shade, so bring a sun umbrella, a sun hat, plenty of sun screen and a protective clothing. As this paradisaical beach surrounded by mangroves and estuaries, mosquito repellent is also a necessity. The sand on the beach can be hot, so bring flip flops to walk walking shoes...

Getting there from Los Ayala...

Drive north along highway 200 from Los Ayala and take the San Blas turn off at Las Varas. The drive to Playa Tortugas will lead you through the Mexican pueblo of Zacualpan and the very scenic area of Boca de Chila. Enjoy  the drive along along the winding country roads, where cattle roam freely; the lush green vistas and hills of the surrounding country side, fields of mango trees and estuaries rich with wildlife, most notably birds. Note: Although the road to the beach is decent, during the rainy season a high clearance vehicle with four wheel drive is a necessity; unless it has not rained for several days and you still need to be prepared for an unexpected downpour which makes the roads muddy and difficult to navigate.
