"Santo"
This means "saint." Mexicans are assigned a saint at birth, and thereafter celebrate that particular saint's day for the rest of their lives. A child's "Dia del Santo" is often celebrated with more bang than a birthday.
Playa San Francisco is a magnificent wildly, beautiful mile long beach located in the chic and charming Mexican beach town of San Pancho. The perfect choice for day trippers seeking a quiet unspoiled beach, a little adventure and some surf action.
The striking, broad sandy beach of Playa San Francisco is a popular spot with locals and tourists for walking, and running at sunrise and sunset. The beach is framed beautifully by the Sierra Madre mountains and the surrounding luxuriant scenery does not disappoint - cobalt blue skies, white sand, clear ocean waters, golden sunsets and tropical foliage in every shade of green imaginable.
The dramatic beach in San Pancho is a frequented by expert surfers seeking some serious wave action and local youth who enjoy body boarding and riding the tube shaped waves on calmer days. However because of the mammoth sized breakers and strong currents swimming at this beach is best left to swimmers of the Olympic calibre. Instead enjoy some rest and relaxation, catch a few golden brilliant golden rays, take the time to read a book, or enjoying a cocktail with friends at Wufoo's, the beach side bar at the Costa Azul Adventure Resort. Wufoo's is located at the far north end of the beach. The restaurant is open to the public and the service staff is most hospitable.
Popular activities in San Pancho include surfing lessons, horseback riding along the beach or through the surrounding back country; bird watching; and deep sea fishing for Dorado, Red Snapper, and Sailfish.
If you are hankering for an extraordinary vacation experience, volunteer a few hours of your time to help out the Ecological Group called "Project Turtle." During the rainy season, sea turtles arrive in the late evening and early morning hours to lay their eggs on the beach and if you choose to extend your day trip to an overnight stay - you will return home with some extra special memories! For more information please see Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde
Lastly, set aside an hour or two, to enjoy shopping for Huichol handicrafts, unique art pieces and fashionable resort ware.
San Pancho is an easy day trip from Los Ayala, as it is just a thirty minute drive south along highway 200.
Taxi fare to San Pancho from Los Ayala ranges from 150 to 200 pesos.
The cost for a ride on the collectivo to San Pancho from La Penita runs around 50 pesos, and takes about 45 minutes. The collectivos depart from La Penita every half hour during peak season, and every hour during quieter times.
